The Clinical Muscle Physiology Laboratory is dedicated to advancing the understanding of vascular biology and skeletal muscle physiology. Our mission is to develop innovative solutions for patients suffering from peripheral artery disease (PAD) and similar vascular conditions. Utilizing state-of-the-art human and animal tissue-based models, we aim to generate actionable insights that drive drug discovery and device development.
Our laboratory integrates cutting-edge image and omics analytics to produce data that is ready to inform clinical decisions. We specialize in creating organoid systems, engineering microphysiological platforms, and executing comprehensive analytical pipelines. Through collaboration with biotech and med-tech teams, we strive to push the boundaries of research and improve patient outcomes. We are also committed to fostering scientific education by creating engaging visual content to demystify complex concepts in our field.

Dr. Panagiotis Koutakis
Biomedical Scientist
Dr. Panagiotis Koutakis is a muscle physiologist whose research program centers on the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease. His research insterests are in ischemia and reperfusion injury, reactive oxygen species, impaired mitochondrial bioenergetics, and oxidative damage in the skeletal muscle.

Dr. Iraklis I. Pipinos
Vascular Surgeon
Dr. Pipinos is a vascular surgeon and professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His research focuses on evaluating the pathophysiology of the myopathy and neuropathy of the ischemic legs with peripheral artery disease, the functional impairment it produces in patients and the optimal ways to diagnose and treat it.
